An injection moulding process technician sets up and services injection moulds and programs injection mould machines.

Job Description

In injection moulding, an injection unit melts and injects a plastic into a mould. The plastic cools in the mould and the mould’s moving parts open to release the final product. Among products made by this method are Blu-Ray discs, steering wheels, circuit boards, and iPod touch phones.

An injection mould processing technician is responsible for setting up and servicing injection moulding machines. He or she also provides troubleshooting when there are problems with the process of the machine.

The injection moulding process technician requires a working knowledge of plastic processing and the methods of recycling. He or she assists design and tooling teams in the redesign of needed components.

Because the process technician is required to calculate production requirements and measure product dimensions, a working knowledge of applied mathematics is essential. He or she must be able to demonstrate effective communication skills to communicate orally with customers, suppliers, sales personnel, and other workers as well as in writing to record complex product/process data and interpret quality data. In addition, the process technician must be sufficiently computer literate to access quality control or process information online. He or she should also be able to explain the melt index, describe the impact of variations in cycle, and describe the chemical changes that may occur during production and how they affect products.
