Job Description
It is 2:30pm on Friday afternoon and the machine operators are working diligently to fill an order for custom architectural plastic model parts for a trade show on the weekend. All of a sudden the air compressor stops working; it has blown a main hose. Work grinds to a halt on the factory floor. The machine is shut off and the Maintenance Technician is called.
A Maintenance Technician is a versatile worker in the plastics industry who ensures that the equipment involved in plastics processing is properly maintained and repaired as necessary.
Daily Activities
- examines machinery for defects
- follows daily/weekly maintenance schedules
- maintains records on machine life cycles
- repairs machinery and parts
- communicates findings in written form
The Maintenance Technician requires a working knowledge of plastics processing and needs a broad base of skills in electronics, hydraulics, and mechanics. He or she is an asset to a company as troubleshooting/trouble prevention is the Maintenance Technician’s main role.
The technician’s time is spent lubricating and cleaning machine parts, assemblies, and equipment to prevent system breakdowns. This requires the ability to feed, load, or remove parts from plastic processing machinery. The Maintenance Technician should be aware of the inner workings of the various machines used in a given factory. As part of regular maintenance or a necessary repair, the Maintenance Technician may be required to file, trim, saw, buff, drill, and deburr machine parts, using hand and power tools. A competent Maintenance Technician adheres to a well-timed maintenance and safety inspection schedule on machinery and is also skilled at recognizing when a machine is not operating at its most efficient level. This prevents unexpected breakdowns from happening.
