The Biker Haven Plastic Company has been manufacturing bicycle helmets for 25 years. The design of its helmet has changed over the years as staff worked to make a tough, shatter-resistant helmet to protect mountain bikers. The outer shell is moulded out of polycarbonate and it is lined with moulded, shock-absorbing foam made from polystyrene. Throughout the design process, the company consulted with a Mechanical Engineer to ensure a quality product for its clients.

The Mechanical Engineer was responsible for the stress analysis of helmet parts to optimize performance in the design of the helmet. The engineer worked closely with the plastics part and mould designers in the helmet development process.

In his or her role at a plastics company, the Mechanical Engineer may have production, research or administrative tasks necessary to take a concept of a product to a finished state. Applying his or her knowledge of engineering principles, the Mechanical Engineer designs products, machines such as injection-moulding machines, instruments or systems in cooperation with part and mould designers. Planning and direction from the Mechanical Engineer will guide engineering personnel to make test apparatus and equipment and to develop of methods and procedures for testing products or systems.

The Mechanical Engineer will analyze proposed products, systems or processes to ensure conformity to engineering design and customer specifications. Research and analysis of data from mould filling, cooling ,and finite element analysis, in conjunction with customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals allows the engineer to determine feasibility and safety of a design or an application and offer improvements. Stress analysis of parts will also optimize part and mechanism design. The Mechanical Engineer may recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
