Set-Up Technician
The installation of moulds and tools in a plastic company requires a Set-Up Technician.

Job Description

The thermal insulating ability of polystyrene foam contributes to the success of programs such as “Meals on Wheels,” which serve millions of senior citizens every year. In the plastic company where the food containers are made, a new vacuum-moulding machine has been ordered and just arrived for installation.

The Set-Up Technician will take on the responsibility for installing and supervising the installation of the moulds and tools in the plant.

Daily Activities
  • reads blueprints and job orders
  • checks machine specification
  • positions machines
  • operates machine tools
The Set-Up Technician sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathes or moulds, according to specifications, tooling instructions, and standard charts provided by the engineers and mould designers or makers. The Technician will position and secure any workpieces or machines on the factory floor.

During installation, the Technician will read blueprints or job orders for product specifications, such as dimensions and tolerances, and tooling instructions, such as fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, and will determine the sequence of operations during the installation. In doing so, the Technician is applying knowledge of machining methods to ensure that the required material, quality, and cycles are met. He or she may also take on a supervisory role during the installation, instead of doing all the hands-on work. The end result is a new machine or tool that can be operated properly and safely in order to mould the plastic product desired.
