In May 2008, Daniel Burd, a 16 year old Canadian, won the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa after discovering that Sphingomonas, a type of bacteria, can degrade over 40% of the weight of plastic bags in less than three months. The applicability of this finding is still a matter for the future.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

Program Description:
Secondary School Apprenticeship is a provincial career program that enables students to move directly into the apprenticeship training system while attending high school. Students, nineteen years and under, complete up to 480 hours of work experience that count towards their apprenticeship and course credits. They can take courses relevant to their career paths, ensuring attainment of prerequisites for their chosen occupations.


ALBERTA

Program Description:
This is a modified apprenticeship program that provides the opportunity to begin apprenticeship training and earn wages while attending high school. Apprentices accumulate hours of on-the-job training as credit towards their apprenticeship and towards a high school diploma or certificate of achievement. Youth also have access to other Apprenticeship programs.

Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program

NEW BRUNSWICK

New Brunswick's program provides an opportunity for students at the high school level to become actively involved in skill training and work experience related to their occupational interests. It operates outside the school year.

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES


Schools North Apprenticeship Program (SNAP)

Program Description:
This is a secondary school program in which students can become registered apprentices in one of the designated trades. Students can divide their time between academics in school and trades training in the workplace, for which they can receive both school credits and apprenticeship time credits. Its objective is to smooth the transition from school to the workplace.

NUNAVUT


Nunavut Early Apprenticeship Training (NEAT)

Nunavut Early Apprenticeship Training (NEAT) is a program to provide senior secondary students who are interested in the trades with an opportunity to explore trades and to work with journeypersons/skilled tradespersons on work sites. It provides them with the opportunity to earn time credits towards level one apprenticeship and to learn in an experiential, adult setting away from the classroom.
